Death, love, grieving, guilt, torment-- all of these yet a true picture of a family facing the reality of terminal illess. Black and white illustrations by Jim Kay are stark images reflecting Conor's world.

Inspired by a story idea from Siobhan Dowd.denalibrarianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05852902770130530483noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25820111.post-44879111827524503682011-11-17T14:35:00.000-08:002011-11-18T14:39:17.514-08:00Beth Revis
Across the Universe

Amy is floating, dreaming and waking with no sense of time, but upon awakening her life really goes downhill.

Amy's family is in cryogenic stasis on a colonizing spaceship, Elder is the leader-in-training of the ship's non-frozen inhabitants. Someone left Amy to die, rescued by Elder, they team up to solve the mystery of the killings and the future of the ship's population. This teen dystopia novel asks the hard questions--What makes a good leader? How far will you go to save your way of life? What do children owe their parents? Does diversity cause discord? Good sci-fi plot with believable characters.denalibrarianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05852902770130530483noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25820111.post-38460149959363170022011-10-08T15:25:00.000-07:002011-11-18T14:13:01.895-08:00Isaac Marion
Warm Bodies

A zombie love story with characters you can identify with, music by Sinatra and the Beatles.

R is a zombie whose days are filled with groaning, riding escalators, one word conversations, and an occasional hunt for humans in the nearby city. But R thinks about his world and feels pity toward his victims, during one life-altering encounter his........meal........ triggers intense memories and feelings. Her whole life has been dedicated to survival of the human race currently trapped in small military enclaves awaiting the next undead onslaught. Unusual plot with a familiar theme-- young idealists changing the world.denalibrarianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05852902770130530483noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25820111.post-67116340789126655112011-10-07T14:42:00.000-07:002011-10-08T15:24:01.755-07:00
Louise Penny
Still Life

Looking for an award-winning mystery series? Meet Chief Inspector Armand Gamache of the Surete du Quebec...........

It's great to find a mystery author whose characters pull you into the story, a plot that intrigues and a setting you can visualize. Even better if the books are a series. Louise Penny's Three Pines series, begins with Still Life and the death of Jane Neal, a beloved schoolteacher and reluctant artist. Was it a hunting accident or deliberate? This is the question for Chief Inspector Gamache, a quiet, observant, happily married man who is drawn into Jane's group of grieving friends. The characters are rounded with compassion for their flaws but reader is not overwhelmed by details. Somewhat akin to Ngaio Marsh, Charles Todd, Julia Spencer-Fleming. <br We hear from a Chinese doctor encountering the first victims locked in a hospital, a human smuggler transporting desperate refugees to Pakistan, an astronaut observing the lights going out around the world, an American soldier in the first coordinated standoff in upstate New York. Snapshots of a world gone mad, humans flee to the tundra to escape the zombie mobs but without adequate food or shelter, they go feral; a government administrator re-training white collar workers to dig latrines and shear sheep; a film producer creating propaganda films to stop the mass suicides. Not about zombies really, but people confronting hysteria, grief, fear, greed, hunger, climate change and social upheaval. Read it before the 2012 movie with Brad Pitt.denalibrarianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05852902770130530483noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25820111.post-29496814757820193132011-02-16T12:36:00.000-08:002011-02-16T13:13:38.591-08:00Barbara Cleverly
The Joe Sandilands mystery series

Cleverly sets the series in 1920s India, her protagonist is Joe Sandilands, former Army soldier, now a Scotland Yard detective on loan to the Bengali police force. However, Joe moves about to India's hot spots to solve crimes at the behest of the Viceroy's government. Exotic locale, colorful people, and intricate plotting. In book three, The Damascened Blade, Joe is visiting a friend in the Northwest Frontier, bordering Afghanistan, acting as bodyguard for a visiting American heiress when one of the visiting Afghani leaders dies. Is it murder or an accident? When a government official and the heiress are kidnapped by the leader's friend, war becomes a real possibility. Joe is trying to solve the crime, rescue the hostages and avert a war. But this is not an action adventure story, people talk, observe and share information. With definite similarities to Agatha Christie and Ngaio Marsh, Joe has to decide if he should follow the law or do what is right.denalibrarianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05852902770130530483noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25820111.post-21113500588429398122011-02-09T12:33:00.000-08:002011-02-09T12:52:49.610-08:00Jenny Cain mysteries by Nancy Pickard

Lets go back a few years to a paperback whodunit series that you may have missed. Jenny Cain lives in Port Frederick, MA and works as the head of a charitable foundation. But this isn't a Jessica Fletcher cozy, Jenny is lonely, a bit insecure in her important position, her mother is in a coma and her sister hates her. She gets involved in a mystery by her family members, old friends or the foundation. For example in No Body, the third book in the series, her sixth grade teacher stumbles across an empty Civil War era graveyard, thus the title. Jenny's guy, a policeman, is out of town and his replacement is a real jerk. She follows the evidence despite him, working with a reporter to figure out who is killing the employees of a funeral home. Not just another cozy filled with quirky endearing characters, Pickard writes people of substance, with feelings and realistic reactions, some with not-so-nice qualities, some just creeps. So the overall effect is a bit funny, a bit sad and quite engaging. Plus I never can figure out who done it.

first book: Generous Deathdenalibrarianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05852902770130530483noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25820111.post-768068971673150882011-01-25T10:41:00.000-08:002011-01-25T10:54:17.437-08:00The 13th hour
Richard Doetsch

Nick is alone in an interrogation room, about to be charged for murdering his wife, a debonair man walks in, hands him a pocket watch and an envelope telling Nick he can change the past but he only has 13 hours. Pulled backward in time one hour at a time, Nick struggles with figuring out who killed Julia and how to stop it. Racing around, meeting the same friends and enemies over and over, unsure who to trust, watching friends die again and again, Nick realizes changing the past is dangerous to himself and everyone he touches. Fast-paced plot with sympathetic characters, similar in appeal to the book Angels and Demons and the movie 88 Minutes.denalibrarianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05852902770130530483noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25820111.post-38424025996672603572011-01-07T11:52:00.000-08:002011-01-07T13:40:58.133-08:00Book review

The Knife of Never Letting Go
Patrick Ness

Teen fiction, first book of Chaos Walking series, for readers over 14.

How does a boy become a man? Todd, is turning 13 next month, a normal teenage boy with a dog by his side going to pick apples for his guardian. His village is populated by men, only men. A disease wiped out all the women and left the men broadcasting all their thoughts aloud. When Todd encounters a silence in the swamp behind the town, his old life is over. Part sci-fi, part non-stop chase, part coming of age, all compelling. Somewhat similar to The Golden Compass, fast-paced, emotional, with a dark tone, you are racing along side the narrator, just hoping.denalibrarianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05852902770130530483noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25820111.post-40911339189896033512011-01-05T12:33:00.000-08:002011-01-05T13:57:20.168-08:00Book review

A Memory Between Us

Sarah Sundin

Christian fiction set in 1943 England. Sundin presents a romance between Ruth, a hardworking American nurse supporting her siblings and Jack, an ambitious American pilot, torn between a desire for promotion and family expectations that he join the ministry. Ruth is afraid her secret will be exposed, losing her job and family. Jack wants to be the best only seeing the goal ahead. Sundin gives the reader historical details of nursing, combat and wartime Britain in a page turning inspirational melodrama. Characters throughout have difficult problems to challenge their love and faith. Similar in tone to Dee Henderson, also a inspirational author, this is a story for readers who like a sweet romance and action as well.denalibrarianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05852902770130530483noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25820111.post-9034599982010665982010-09-28T13:16:00.000-07:002010-09-29T13:34:48.542-07:00Teen fiction suggestions for Wrestlemania and reluctant readers in general

Brisick, Jamie
Have Board, Will Travel: definitive history of surf, skate and snow
YA 797.32 Bri

Crutcher, Chris
IronMan
Anger at his father fuels 17 year old Bo's quest for victory in the triathlon.
J Fic Cru

Whale Talk
T.J. is a senior, great at sports who puts together a swim team of misfits, to challenge the football jocks.
YA Fic Cru

Harmon, Michael
Skate
Ian and Sammy are on the run looking for a relative that can help.
YA Fic Har

Hobbs, Will
Downriver
15 year old Jesse and other teens of a wilderness survival team abandon their leader, steal a van and raft the dangerous Grand Canyon.
YA Fic Hob

Horton, Ron
Extreme Athletes.
Bios of 6 extreme sport athletes.
YA 796.046 Hor

Lipsyte, Robert
Yellow Flag
Kyle must drive his injured brother's race car. Scenes from his marriage, past, present and future overlap with his time alone in New York City, cricket subculture, past and present and his somewhat rocky friendship with Chuck from Trinidad. This sounds completely unlikely somehow it works: a European point of view of an American time and place and improbable connections between human beings.

Famous author is coming to Roseville!
Tobias Wolff, author of Old School will be appearing at Martha Riley Library on Friday, March 6 at 6pm. Tolkien's Fellowship of the Ring for the first time. I had already watched Peter Jackson's film of the same name, this is the reverse of what I usually do. Though I did enjoy the film, I'm afraid the old adage is true-- the book is better than the movie.
All the poetry in the book is lost in the film, songs are an intricate part of Tolkien's world building. Although it is hard to imagine Orlando Bloom breaking into song as the fellowship forges ahead in their quest. The viewing public today finds it hard to imagine a warrior who can sing about his troubles. Of course, some of the scenes have been shortened or left out but I think two points bothered me the most. One, the hobbits are not dopey, child-like klutzes in the book. Pippin and Merry are clever, observant and helpful, it is Frodo who gives the show away in the Prancing Pony not Pippin. But Frodo slips on the ring at the end of a song, once again hard to visualize the leading character, dancing and singing on a barroom table. The other critical difference is that Boromir is a much more slimy bugger in the book and isn't killed by Orcs in Frodo's defense. All of which reminds of another reason I enjoy a book more thoroughly, when I forget which character has which name from this village or that, I simply flip backward until I find the right passage. No luck with backing up the DVD, I can never find the remote.denalibrarianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05852902770130530483noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25820111.post-16246847868528102202008-06-25T17:24:00.001-07:002008-06-25T18:37:30.343-07:00Summer Reading Program has started!

If you have a child between the ages of 5 and 18, we can help you keep them reading through the summer!

Stop by any of our three libraries to pick up a log sheet, read 20 minutes a day for four weeks and come back for your prize. Kind of unusual in fiction, but not in this list. The setting is really a large part of the story as Pickett is in the middle between environmentalists and ranchers/developers. Joe is the key to the story, his character is very rich, he isn't perfect so he is likeable. A very good story to start off a great series.

Donald Harstad
Carl Houseman
Eleven Days
Deputy Sheriff Carl Houseman has a dry sense of humor which contrasts nicely with the humidity of the Iowa summer. Satanic cults and ritualistic killing makes this a high tension thriller with a low-key, no nonsense narrator who keeps up the one-liners. Lots of fun with this series, which I confess a partiality for since I am an Iowan.

Craig Johnson
Walt Longmire series
The Cold Dish
Set in Wyoming, Sheriff Longmire is a widower, a father and a good friend. He is also in charge of the murder investigation of Cody Pritchard, who raped Melissa Little Bird, but got off easy with a suspended sentence. Lots of humor, textured characters and a protagonist that is easy to like. Wonderfully written, the descriptions of Wyoming countryside brought the story to life. I really enjoyed this book and the ending was quite a surprise.denalibrarianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05852902770130530483noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25820111.post-38380774463148478322008-04-19T10:26:00.000-07:002008-04-19T10:51:55.383-07:00Earth Day in Roseville!

Today at Mahany Park (intersection of Woodcreek Oaks and Pleasant Grove) the city is celebrating Earth Day.
